A cataract happens when the lens of the eye develops cloudy patches. These are usually caused by proteins building up in the lens, most often with age. Over time the patches can grow and make vision blurry or misty. Left untreated, cataracts can lead to serious sight loss, and they are one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide.
