Hay fever, also called seasonal allergic rhinitis, happens when your immune system overreacts to a harmless substance such as pollen. Cells in your eyes and nose, called mast cells, release histamine. This makes blood vessels widen and tissues swell, causing red, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. Unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus, so it isn't contagious

Pollen counts are usually highest on warm, dry, windy days, and in early morning and early evening.
Smoke, perfume, traffic fumes and air conditioning aren't allergens, but they can irritate eyes that are already sensitive.
Instil 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s). For best results, start using the drops before the pollen season begins and keep using them regularly, even on days when your symptoms are mild.
Contact lens wearers: take out soft contact lenses before using these drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in, as the preservative can be absorbed by soft lenses.
